Technical Writer / Communications Specialist - Full Time

Beam Reach Consulting Group seeks a full-time Technical Writer/Communication Specialist with experience or interest in infrastructure resilience and/or security, renewable energy, climate change, and social equity to support client projects related to U.S. energy, transportation, security, and other infrastructure. Candidates will bring expertise in audience analysis, public understanding of science communication, outreach and engagement media, and interorganizational/intergroup communication to leadership theory, project management, change management, and organizational strategy in support of clients in government and industry.

  • Position: Technical Writer/Communications Specialist – Full Time

  • Location: Washington, DC Metro area. Flexible office location opportunity. Reliable internet connectivity required to work remotely and join virtual meetings. Opportunities for some domestic travel may be needed for short (2–3 day) meetings, subject to availability.

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in English, Communication, Technical Writing, Journalism, or related field. Advanced degree in similar fields is a strong plus.

  • Experience: 5+ years in communications or related field, including communication strategy and/or management and use of social media. Either academic study or professional experience acceptable.

  • Desired skills:

    • Effective written and oral communication skills.

    • Knowledge of strategic planning, project leadership, team leadership, and communications best practices.

    • Knowledge of security policies and best practices, including cybersecurity.

    • Mastery of current software tools for business (e.g., MS Office Suite, Project, Visio, GSuite).

    • Mastery of other software a plus, particularly for digital media creation and maintenance.

  • Estimated hours/week: Full time

What are your responsibilities? You will be asked to perform…

  • Conduct research: Perform informal interviews, discussions, and independent inquiries to gather input for communications pieces (e.g., technical papers, grant submissions, manuals, reports, brochures, articles, blog posts, presentations, web site content, formal emails).

  • Write and develop and content: Develop draft communications for a variety of audiences and channels.

  • Research, outline, write and edit technical and lay documents: Grammar and content editing for technical reports and outreach communications.

  • Develop engaging and innovative communications: including digital media, conference presentations, print communications, and web-based content.

  • Contribute to communications strategies and plans: participate in business development and client culture-change projects and identify and recommend opportunities for Beam Reach Consulting Group.

  • Attend and actively participate in client meetings and discussions.
